I recently purchased an engine (Model 33R877-0029) from Small Engine Surplus, and have it installed and powering my riding mower. Even though the mower was only a few years old, last year the original engine began smoking and the situation got increasingly worse until this year it was pretty much unbearable to operate, along with using a quart of oil each time we mowed.
I wanted to fix the engine if possible (short of a complete teardown to the rings, etc.), and hoped the problem might be something less drastic than a problem with the piston, rings or bearings.
Last year I contacted Small Engine Surplus to see about a replacement engine in the event my efforts to solve the smoking problem weren’t successful. Brian told me which replacement engines I could use, but he also offered several suggestions about possible easy-to-fix causes for the smoking.
I tried everything Brian suggested, as well as some other ideas I had from reading up on such problems. After fighting the problem last season and at the beginning of this season, I realized the problem with my engine must be broken rings, and that is not a repair I wanted to undertake. I contacted Brian mid-day on a Friday to order the replacement engine, and by that evening Brian had the engine packaged and shipped. It arrived only a couple business days later.
I want to say that my experience with Brian and his outfit has been extremely positive from the word go. First, Brian went out of his way, and spent his time emailing me, to suggest possible fixes for my old engine, even though such a fix would have cost him a sale. When, months later, I was close to giving up and ordering the new engine, Brian again took his time to communicate with me about the engine choices, availability, and shipping options.
When I placed my order, Brian acted to ship my new engine far more quickly than I could have expected. Once I received the new engine, it was a perfect replacement, and I made the switch (even with my limited mechanical skills) in a couple hours work.
As far as I am concerned, if you need a small engine, the only place you should consider buying that engine is Small Engine Surplus. You will not be disappointed.
